Colors of the Rainbow: Purple and Blue!



Purple and blue fruits and veggies are super hard to find, but that’s why they are super important to eat. I bet you can’t guess what they have! Did you guess antioxidants and Vitamin C? Well, you’re right!

Purple and blue fruits and veggies also have a group of phytochemicals called “anthocyanins” that give them their purpley blue color. These can help keep your heart healthy, reduce your risk for cancer and may even help memory! That’s a good reason to eat your purples and blues!

Which fruits and veggies can you think of that are blue or purple? Maybe plums, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, figs, eggplants, and purple cabbage? Did you know there are purple potatoes, carrots, asparagus, artichokes and tomatoes too? See if you can find something purple or blue at the store this week! I’m going to get blueberries because they are my absolute most favorite fruit!
